I originally felt I couldn’t do Mãe
na Zona proper justice in translation, but between Antônio
steadily cajoling me, and the fact that I happened to have found myself
with a lot of free time on my hands, I eventually succumbed.
The result is Womb Wrecker Syndrome.
It’s basically a highly graphic, drug, sex, and alcohol-fueled
romp through the brothels and suanas of 1980’s São Paulo,
tempered with poignant and tender moments that deal with life, death,
and love.
So, if you happen to be some sort of Puritan or religious fundamentalist,
consider this fair warning that you probably will
find it offensive (but please buy the book anyway and feel free to protest
its publication…the publicity will prove invaluable, I'm sure!)
